我在念誦時要意念四臂觀音之外;

Anyway,

而不該有比較的思維;
天空中的小鳥飛過,天空並不試圖挽留;朵朵白雲飄過,天空並沒試圖去抓着它們;

Joy of Living

I have been attempting to blog my experience of joining "Joy of Living" meditation retreat yet both the blog and time disallowed me from doing so.

This was my very first time for joining Tibetan Buddhism's activity. Regarding this, I sincerely thank Ahgu for giving me the opportunity to approach to somewhere I have never been to and somewhere I like so much.
So like what I have mentioned above, I have never attended to any Tibetan Buddhism's activity, and don't even say I can meet any Rinpoche before. So Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche naturally was the first one I met in my whole life.

Before that, Ahgu and Big boss did indeed tell me that he is known as "The HAPPIEST people in the world". To be frank, this notable title is the factor which attracted me to give out my RM100 and sign up for the retreat. The second factor is I have never seen Tibetan Rinpoche. Meditation, just put aside as I thought it will be similar to where I learned from Mahayana Buddhism previously.

Thus four of us (five in the second day) participated the retreat for two days which was 5 and 6/4/2011 ( glad that I able to blog this within the same month). I drove to Ipoh for both days which seriously made me tiring yet happy. If not mistaken, I can still remember the advice from mummy three days before the journey (before I came back to Kampar) that not to drive far from Kampar. It is not a far distance lah, mummy. I am sorry.
Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche
First of all, the conservative thought regarding meditation in my mind was broken down after the retreat. The first day, Rinpoche told us "no meditation is the best meditation", I can remembered it precisely as it broke my confident terribly at first. It is easy to speak yet hard to walk.

Rinpoche analyzed "monkey mind" to us before meditation instruction began. He said that monkey mind is the one which caused us couldn't concentrate as monkey mind has never wanted to rest so that they kept jumping up and down, here and there, worrying this and that, afraid of everything.

To be a wise man, Rinpoche said we should take the problem as support, in other sense, we should get monkey mind as our support to awareness. To deal with it, we are adviced to be its boss and give it job(training). Until here, can you catch up what it meant? The job is referred to meditation though.

As a modern people, it is indeed a difficult task for us to concentrating on our breathe that we usually might easily get in sleeping mood when we meditated for long time. We often don't sleep on time and sufficiently. We often don't live in a healthy life. The way of Rinpoche's teaching is to do short time but more times and meditation can be done anytime, anywhere.

There are several ways of meditating:
Open Awareness
This is similar to the way that we usually do. To cross your legs and sit still, hold your spine and place your head and tongue in a proper way (you can ask me in detail if you have never learned meditation before). Next, you can either chose to close your eyes or open your eyes. I personally prefer close eyes as it will be less interference for me. You can start observing your breathe after all, try not to control it. For Rinpoche, he asked us to relax only as most of the participants have never learned meditation before.

Visual Meditation
All "preparation for your body" is same as Open Awareness (same apply to all method latter). This time, you cannot close your eyes but try to focus on one thing in front of you. Look at it and know you are looking at it. You can also switch to other focal point. As long as you know you are looking at a flower/vase/fan, you got your awareness.

Sound Meditation
This is related to our hearing. Try to focus on a sound and you can also switching one sound to another one. If you were trying to stick on one sound, it will make you stressed and tight which bring no benefit to our meditation. You may close your eyes so that more concentrate you can be.

Smell Meditation and Taste Meditation
This both are the homeworks given by Rinpoche when our lunch time. Try to smell your food calmly before you ate it. You know you are smelling it. Then following is to taste precisely the food when you ate it. You know you are eating and tasting the food. Enjoy the current moment.

Sleeping Meditation
This is not to ask you to sleep soundly and simply. There are two ways, sitting and laying down. We did sitting one. You have to watch your sleepiness and your tiredness. To watch your body (i meant not opening your eyes and watching your body firmly) with your mind. Most people will become more awake after this meditation and some will probably fall asleep. However, when you fall asleep, you yourself must aware that you are sleeping and at least kept some awareness (not to fall down). This is not easy. Rinpoche said if you knew that you are doing meditation after you woke up only can considered as sleeping meditation. Besides, there is no dream happened in a meditated sleep.

Imagination(妄念) Meditation
According to the teaching I learned previously, both sleepiness and imagination (desire) are the enemies of meditation. They will distract us from working hard. However, here, they can be the support and element for us to do meditation. In this meditation, you are welcome to have imagination, as many as possible. You could not do imagination meditation if you don't have one. Watch every single image that appeared in your mind. I found that my imagination disappeared whenever I watch them. This is the awesome way it is and after that I can do Open Awareness meditation.

Emotional Meditation
This method is to require you to watch the changing of your emotion. Anger, worry, fear, bored and more. And even deep into your heart. Egoism, inferiority, impatient and so on. Then you will got to ask yourself why you have such feeling or emotion. This one is a little bit confusing for me and risky as it is hard to do if you do not have any teacher beside you.

All of above
This is the convenient way Rinpoche gave us is that you can switch the method anytime as you can.

Picture taken after the programme
I enjoyed very much and learned a lot throughout the retreat. It is useful for me thus I would like to share with you guys. Keep awareness and know what you are doing all the time.
Meditation can indeed help calming down your mind and heart and enhance our concentration.

Lastly but not the least, I would like quote one sentence of Rinpoche which is extremely meaningful.
"If you watch the mountain, means that you are not in the mountain" (in other sense, you are not in anger if you watched your anger)

Before I forgot, there was a super pro translator Ani (Buddhist nun in Tibetan Buddhism) in the retreat.
